December 2, 2024: Over the next two weeks, nearly 200 nations will gather in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Scheduled from December 2–13, this pivotal meeting seeks to advance global efforts in land restoration and drought resilience, focused on action to deliver the target of reducing degraded lands by 50% by 2040. Bridging the Financial Gap to Deliver the Biodiversity Plan

In less than 70 days, representatives from 196 countries will gather in Cali, Colombia, for the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties for the Convention on Biological Diversity – referred to as COP16 CBD. Attendees from government, Indigenous leadership, science and academia, civil society, and the business sector, will assess action to halt and reverse the loss of nature, and discuss progress on the 2030 targets and 2050 goals of ‘The Biodiversity Plan’. Sustainable financing and the means to implement this funding will be key themes of conversation, as financial resources are critical for achieving the agreed goals and targets. Historic Great Bear Sea PFP initiative led by First Nations, in partnership with government

On June 25, 2024, the Great Bear Sea Project Finance for Permanence initiative was announced. The historic agreement was led by 17 First Nations, in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, and is the realization of decades of collaboration. The initiative is a model for long-term conservation that brings together partners, funding, and plans to manage 10 million hectares of culturally and environmentally significant ocean, through a network of marine protected areas. The Connect to Protect Eastern Tropical Pacific coalition committed USD$118.5 million in private and public funds in 2022, in support of conservation efforts in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama. This work will strengthen marine protections for the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) which harbors one of the most biologically diverse and highly productive areas in the ocean. Canada Commits CAD$800 million to Advance Indigenous-led Conservation

At the fifteenth Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Montréal, Canada, the Government of Canada announced a commitment of $800 million (CAD) to expand Indigenous-led conservation. The funding will support new and enhanced protections of lands and ocean, expand the Indigenous Guardian and stewardship programs, and catalyze associated investments in Indigenous communities. Broad Coalition Announces Support for Conserving Eastern Tropical Pacific

Colombia, WWF and Partners Announce $245M Herencia Colombia Agreement

The Government of Colombia, with a broad coalition of community, public sector, and private sector partners, demonstrated their commitment to long-term conservation in Colombia by signing a joint declaration to launch a new Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative called Heritage Colombia (or Herencia Colombia in Spanish), which secures $245 million USD of public and private finance to permanently protect 32 million hectares of iconic Colombian landscapes and seascapes.
